Melba Merriweather Brown was born on November 21, 1950, in Bay City, Texas, but was reared in Sweeny, Texas. She was one of four children born to the marital union of Calvin and Alonia Merriweather. Melba completed her primary and secondary education in Sweeny, Texas. After graduating from Sweeny High School, Melba pursued her college studies at Texas Southern University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education with emphasis on special education. She had a passion for helping children with disabilities in underserved communities and was a mental wellness advocate. Melba worked as an educator and a Mental Health and Wellness Specialist Division Manager for William Smith, Sr., Tri-County Child Development Council Inc. in Matagorda, Fort Bend, and Wharton counties for over 20 years. She cherished the special friendships she shared with coworkers who were regarded as family. Melba also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for Wharton Junior College in the Fort Bend Independent School District. As a testament to her service, Melba received special recognition as Early Childhood “Teacher of the Year” and was the recipient of an award presented by the National Mental Health Association.
Melba Merriweather Brown was a member of Neuzion United Methodist Church, in Sweeny, Texas, where she committed her life to Christ and was baptized at an early age. Throughout her life, she served in many capacities which included her role as the Neuzion Church School Superintendent. Melba maintained active membership and enjoyed bible study, specifically under the directorship of Pastor Diana Creeks. Most would agree, Melba had an intriguing personality and was a great storyteller. Joyce, Betty, and Helen will miss their sister’s presence in their lives, especially the fried seafood dinners she prepared to celebrate their birthdays.
Melba Brown Merriweather was preceded in death by her parents Calvin and Alonia Merriweather, and her son, Andre Trevis Merriweather. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Melvin Glynn Merriweather (Catina Terrell Brown Merriweather); sisters Joyce Hayes, Betty Sykes, and Helen Wright (Alex C. Wright); grandchildren Briana Merriweather, Calvin Casey Merriweather, Braelynn Merriweather, Caitlynn Merriweather, Casey Merriweather, Andrea Merriweather, Rhemy Merriweather, Melvin Glynn Merriweather Jr., Jordan Merriweather,
